In the past, telecommuting or telework seemed to be limited for certain professions only. But today, it seems that all kinds of professions can be done through telecommuting method. Whether you are a consultant, an engineer, or a writer, you can always work from the comfort of your personal living space. The idea about having remote work is increasing in popularity because of so many reasons: comfort, convenience, and efficiency.
That’s why more companies allow their employees to work from home. Although they may still have to go to office several times a day, it is nice to know that employees are given the freedom and flexibility to decide how long they are going to be productive, when to do so, where to do so, and how to do so. If you are interested in the idea of working from home and you want to convince your employer about how good the idea is, you need to come up with a strategy and plan so your discussion can be fruitful for you and she/her will likely say ‘yes’.
Here are the things you need to do:
Understand completely and thoroughly about telecommuting. Understand what’s needed – the technology, the attitude, the professional ethic, etc – before you start convincing your employer.
Make sure that you do understand the company’s policy and regulation, so you won’t need to break any of them if you start telecommuting.
Develop a plan. If you go to your boss empty handed and you basically have no idea of where to start or even with the step-by-step progress, it is likely that your boss will reject the idea. However, if you can come up with a plan that is solid, doable, and possible, you may likely get a ‘yes’. Lay out everything, including how the efficiency of working from home can still allow you to contribute to the company and how you won’t neglect your responsibility. It doesn’t hurt if you can show an example of a project that you are working on and you lay out planning of how you are going to finish it – even from home.
Don’t make yourself the center of attention all the time. Everyone hates drama queen, so don’t only focus on you – you should see things from the company’s perspective too. Discuss with your boss how telework won’t only do you good, but also for the company. Describe and explain how telecommuting can be a win-win solution for both you and the company.
Committed to the plan and work flow. Set up a trial period and really pay attention to the check-ins. don’t underestimate the time of when you should report back or how you should give them feedback about the project. You need to show them that there’s nothing to worry about when it comes to working from home, so don’t given them excuses doubting you.
Don’t hesitate to be flexible. Understand the flow or condition of the company, where things can be busy and hectic in certain times – work condition in May is absolutely different from the one in August, for instance. If your office is busy, show your willingness to come more often to work than the regular. If you expect your company to understand your situation, you should do the same thing.
